Active siteMembers of family M60 contain two metal binding ligands and a single catalytic residue found within an HEXXH motif (see the Alignment). The third metal ligand is not currently known.
Activities and specificitiesCurrently, the only identified substrate for enhancin is insect intestinal mucin, which is degraded into a number of fragments (Wang & Granados, 1997). The peptidase is active between pH 8.5 and 10.5.
InhibitorsEnhancin activity is inhibited by metal chelators such as EDTA, EGTA and 1,10-phenanthroline.

Biological functionsEnhancin is incorporated into viral occlusion bodies which are ingested by the host. The occlusion bodies are broken down in the midgut of the host and the enhancin released. The enhancin digests the intestinal mucin in the midgut peritrophic membrane allowing the passage of the virus into the midgut epithelial cells and increased infection (Wang & Granados, 2004).
