Activities and specificitiesLytic activity against the cell walls of several gram-negative bacteria has been detected, but none against gram-positive species (Caldentey & Bamford, 1992). It is thought that enzyme cleaves the cell wall peptide bridge formed by meso-2,6-diaminopimelic acid and D-Ala (Caldentey, 2004).
Molecular structureProtein P5 murein endopeptidase is a single chain of approximately 24 kDa that does not contain any Cys residues. The tertiary structure has not been determined.
