PhysiologyContributes to proteolysis in the vertebrate stomach. In man, expressed primarily in gastric chief cells, but also in lung (Foster et al., 2004). Proenzyme also occurs in seminal fluid (Szecsi et al., 1995).
Pharmaceutical relevancePolymorphism correlates with gastric ulceration, and it has been suggested that restriction-linked polymorphism of gastricsin may be useful as a marker for a genetic predisposition to gastric body ulcer (Ohtaki et al., 1997).
