StructureADAM24 is attached to the surface membrane by means of a membrane anchor (Zhu et al., 2001).
Biological aspectsADAM24 is activated by removal of its prodomain on the sperm plasma membrane rather than intracellularly, as is more usual with ADAM proteins. Processing occurs as sperm move across the caput epididymis. ADAM24 is also phorphorylated at its cytoplasmic tail. This has led to the suggestion that ADAM24 is important for sperm penetration of the zona pellucida, because sperm protein kinase C is activated during the acrosome reaction (Zhu et al., 2001).
